Get Happy: Day Thirty

In this series, we have explored finite ways you can achieve personal happiness. I hope you have enjoyed this series.

30. Be Thankful

We talked about counting your blessings. You really will be happy if you focus on what you already have. You didn’t wake up in the street. You didn’t miss a few meals. You chose what you were going to wear. You had a hot shower. You told your partner or your children you loved them. You patted your dog on the head. You grabbed your keys and your coffee and you drove to work unharmed.

These are just a few examples of things you might have to be thankful for. Don’t reserve your thankfulness for Thanksgiving. Be thankful every day and stop taking things for granted.

You are so awesome right now. You have a plan for your goals. You have friends who love you. You have no regrets. You appreciate the small things. You work hard, play hard, and love yourself. Everyone wants to be you. You would give the shirt off your back to someone who needs it.

7. Don’t Be Afraid To Mess Up

Life happens. We make mistakes. We have made some and we will make more. Handle the clean up with grace. Apologize. Reconcile. Move on. Learn and grow, next time avoiding the same path if you can.

Don’t let fear of screwing up stop you. People regret the things they did NOT do more than the things they tried and failed at. Failure upon failure precedes success. Appreciate that you are pushing yourself.

Laugh at yourself, evaluate yourself and your actions, and make improvements.

6: Live In The Present

What is it they say, “Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a Gift, that’s why it is called the Present”?

What are you doing right now?

Is it going to make you a better, happier person?

Don’t procrastinate. Just Do It. If it’s a phone call, a doctor’s appointment, a workout, or a daily chore, just get it over with and take a step towards a cleaner, happier, and healthier you. When people look back on their lives, what is it they wished they had done? Saved money, hung out with the right people, and gotten healthier.

Start today.

Whatever it is, begin your new journey today. What is your first step?

Get Happy: Day Five

In this series, we will explore finite ways you can achieve personal happiness.

This scene from Aladdin is iconic. Genie takes the form of a bee to give Al advice, and ends with the punny, “Bee yourself.” He rolls his eyes, because he is trying to impress Jasmine and convince her he is a Prince. In the end, Al had to stop lying to her and to himself. He was pretty awesome as the ‘Street Rat’.

5: Be Yourself

A piece of good advice: If you can’t put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.

What is it you are great at? What is it you could spend all day doing and it would fill your soul with joy? Find a way to do that, even if it is not lucrative, as much as possible. Be awesome at it. Be awesome at being you.

Someone will see it. Someone will be inspired to shine like you are from the inside out.

Don’t change so people will like you. Stand up for who you are. People are more touched by the ‘Cinderella stories’ where those who came from the gutters of life turned into great leaders than the stories where a prince married his princess whom he was betrothed to. Sure, both scenarios are happy endings, but in one, you know the person struggled and made themselves happier. Okay, that is a bad example. Not everyone has to struggle to make themselves happy. The point is to be yourself, even if you are already happy. Share your wisdom with others!

Maybe the struggle comes when you throw off the guise of someone you are not, and climb from the folds victoriously YOU.

Today we will talk about Priorities.

4. Put Your Needs Higher On The List

I know some of you may be caring for someone else that truly is helpless and needs you. Newborns, those with disabilities, even needy pets can take special care from people and may have priority when it comes to time and energy. Still, you can take small breaks and ‘smell the roses’. Journal those little things that make you smile: precious moments, relaxing baths, a picnic lunch, or movie date. Count your blessings, even if it was seeing a hummingbird drink from your feeder for the first time.

Put your needs in the front of your mind instead of the back. Give yourself a pedicure. Eat your favorite food. Treat yourself with something that makes you feel good. No one will treat you as well as you treat yourself. Gift yourself to yourself, give back to your well being.

Most importantly, caring for yourself makes you more capable of caring for others. If you are stressed, burnt out, upset, or sick, you can’t give 100% to those you love. You might snap instead of support.

If your passion is caring for others, do it! Just remember yourself, too.

This post is about Honesty.

3. Be True and Truthful To You

Search your soul, look deep down, and be honest about what parts of you are real and true and right, and what parts are weak and need work. Examine your dreams, hopes, and fears; what do you need versus what you want. Make some lists.

Who do you want to become? Set some goals and create objectives, or small steps, to get there.

What do you need to get there? Fill in a calendar, if you have to, with deadlines. If you need a push from others, how will you get it? Who do need to talk to? How soon can these conversations happen?

Take action on your dreams, stand up for your desires, and keep the big picture in mind.



Get Happy: Day Two

In this series, we will explore finite ways you can achieve personal happiness.

Today we explore our problems.

Often we feel defeated and whiny and complain “but I am not good enough, big enough, strong enough to take on this problem”. This is often a lying to ourselves. There is always something we can do, even if it is a small baby step.

2. Face Your Problems Head-On

Whether it is a relationship (see the previous post) or a work problem, or a personal problem, running away from it and hiding is not the best solution. Problems do not disappear on their own. Maybe some time will heal some broken hearts, but time will not solve everything. You have to take action. Don’t be afraid to act. Your problems do not define you.

Let me say that again.

Your problems do not define you.

How you react to them and recover from them defines you. Write down the problem and brainstorm solutions. Think about aspects of the problem, who is involved, what is really at stake. Maybe there is another angle from which to attack it. Will it be a problem in one year? In 5 or 10? Is it worth losing sleep, time, or money over?

Do what you can, even if it seems small. Some problems need documentation. Proof. State your case, back it up. Cover your assets. Get others involved if necessary.

You are bigger and better than the sum of your problems.
